This Illinois welding school offers a welding certificate program where you you will get hands on welding training with Stick (SMAW), MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW). In addition to plate and pipe welding you will also have in classroom learning that will consist of blueprint reading, welding theory and safety.
Rock Valley College also offers a class where you prepare for and take the AWS D1.1 welding certification. I highly recommend this and will greatly increase your chance of getting a higher paying job.

AWS D1.1 plate welding and ASME Section IX pipe welding is also covered. In addition to hands on training you will have in classroom learning that will consist of welding theory and blueprint reading.

Combination Welder (Pipe and Plate)
If you are serious about a welding career then the 30 week combination welding program may be the best choice. What I love about this school is that they offer AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX welding certification testing on site. They offer training on all types of welding and metal cutting along with classes about blueprint reading and welding symbols.
