The combination welding program is probably the best choice for those that are wanting to start a long term welding career. You will learn to pipe weld as well plate weld. Either the combination welder or Associate’s Degree program are the best options for the career minded person. You will learn and get hands on training with pipe welding as well as plate/structural with SMAW, MIG and TIG.
A degree may not be very beneficial to someone that is an entry level welder but they can pay off in the future. If you ever decide to go back to school or apply for managerial positions a degree can be helpful.

What I love about this school is that they offer on site welding certification testing for AWS D1.1 (structural) and ASME Section IX (pipe). Having welding certifications is a great for getting your welding career started in the right direction.
Other options for welding training in Texas: Welding Apprenticeships
A welding apprenticeship can be a great way to earn while you learn. Both the Ironworkers and Boilermakers unions offer apprenticeship programs that can last anywhere between four and five years. During each year of your apprenticeship you’ll make more money until you become a journeyman.
The pay for apprenticeships can range anywhere between $17-$25 per hour depending on which geographical location you work for. The pay for a full-fledged journeyman can be over $30 per hour. In addition to an excellent wage you will also receive excellent health benefits at no cost or little cost to you.
While the Ironworkers and Boilermakers are not strictly welders their work does encompass a significant amount of welding. In addition to welding you will learn many other skills like rigging, pipefitting, crane signaling and other construction related skills.
